Riparian buffer

Riparian buffers are vegetated, often forested, areas (“strips”) next to streams, rivers, lakes and other waterways protecting aquatic environments from the impacts of surrounding land use. During flood events, riparian vegetation slows run-off by absorbing excess water, reducing peak flow and helping to mitigate potential flood damage downstream.
