NATURANCE contributes to the Europe and Central Asia Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Budva, Montenegro, 6 – 8 November 2024

The Regional Platforms serve as a key forum for assessing progress on the Sendai Framework for DRR at the regional level.

The Regional Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction (RP) serve as a key forum for assessing progress on the Sendai Framework for DRR at the regional level.  The next edition of the RP Europe and Central Asia, hosted by the Government of Montenegro in collaboration with the UNDRR, with support from UNDP, the European Commission, and the Council of Europe, will take place in Budva, Montenegro, 6 – 8 November 2024. Held every three years, the platform has become a unique vehicle for addressing regional disaster risk challenges, bringing together governments from 55 Member States, civil society, and the private sector.

NATURANCE will have a strong presence at the Regional Platform (RP) through several activities.

Ignite Stage

First, an online and pre-recorded Ignite Stage talk organized by NATURANCE partner CMCC, titled “Nature-Based Insurance Solutions: Engaging Private Finance for Ecosystem Restoration“.

Nature-based insurance solutions present a transformative approach to integrating private finance into ecosystem restoration efforts. These innovative mechanisms leverage the principles of insurance to create financial products that support the conservation and rehabilitation of natural habitats, such as wetlands, forests, and coastal areas. By insuring against climate-related risks and natural disasters, these solutions not only provide financial protection but also incentivize the preservation and restoration of ecosystems that offer critical services, including flood mitigation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity support. NATURANCE exemplifies this approach, showcasing how insurance can serve dual purposes: protecting assets and fostering sustainable environmental practices. This presentation explores the framework, benefits, and challenges of nature-based insurance solutions, highlighting their potential to mobilize private capital for public good, thereby contributing to resilient societies and robust natural ecosystems.

Transformative Changes for Effective Risk Governance

The first webinar, “Transformative Changes for Effective Risk Governance,” organized by Veronica Casartelli (CMCC) and co-moderated by Cristina Brailescu (European Commission, DG ECHO), will take place from 10:00-11:00 CET. The discussion will focus on the transformative changes needed for effective risk governance, featuring keynote speakers Cristina Marugan (Government of Spain), Christina Corbane (European Commission, JRC/DRMKC), Patricia Pella (UNDRR), and Jaroslav Mysiak (CMCC).

Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction through Science and Policy: A Multi-Level Approach

The second webinar, scheduled for 15:00, is organized by the UNDRR European Science & Technology Advisory Group (E-STAG) and will focus on “Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction through Science and Policy: A Multi-Level Approach.” The session will address the role of scientific and technical expertise in shaping disaster risk policies, explore how countries can strengthen DRR implementation through the Sendai Framework in alignment with EU policies, facilitate discussions on bridging the gap between science, policy, and practice, and showcase successful case studies and research findings supporting evidence-based disaster risk reduction strategies. Moderated by Christian Resch from the Disaster Competence Network Austria, the webinar will feature E-STAG members Dilanthi Amaratunga (University of Huddersfield), Alex Altshuler (Israel National Emergency Management Authority), Daniela Di Bucci (Italian Civil Protection Department), Jaroslav Mysiak (CMCC), and Elena Arefieva (All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense).
