NATURANCE at the Upcoming United Nations Conferences

NATURANCE will be featured at the Convention on Biological Diversity and at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

NATURANCE will be featured at both the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (21 October to 1 November, 2024) and the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (11 to 22 November, 2024)

The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a global gathering of governments, scientists, and stakeholders dedicated to addressing the urgent challenges of biodiversity loss. Hosted in Cali, Colombia, COP 16 brings together representatives from nearly 200 countries to discuss and negotiate policies aimed at conserving biological diversity, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, and ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources. This conference is a vital platform for advancing international commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to halt biodiversity decline and restore ecosystems globally.

NATURANCE, along with several other EU-funded projects, will be present at the EU Pavilion  during COP16, thanks to the support of the European Research Executive Agency (REA). These projects focus on protecting and restoring ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and integrating nature-based solutions into policy frameworks. Together, they make a significant impact by bridging science and policy to address global biodiversity challenges, showcasing Europe’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainable development on the global stage. NATURANCE is a key project dedicated to boosting investments in ecosystem restoration.

The 29th annual Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will bring together world leaders, policymakers, climate experts, and stakeholders from around the globe to address the urgent challenges of climate change. The conference will build on the progress made in previous COP meetings, particularly around implementing the Paris Agreement, with the goal of keeping global warming well below 2°C and striving to limit it to 1.5°C. Key topics will include climate finance, nature-based solutions, loss and damage, and strengthening global climate resilience. The EU Pavilion, situated in the blue zone which is accessible only to the UNFCCC-accredited participants,  will serve as an information and networking hub. NATURANCE has contributed to the work of the Expert Group on Slow Onset Events (SoE), established under the UNFCCC Warsaw International Mechanism. This expert group, led by Jaroslav Mysiak, coordinator of the NATURANCE project, has produced a report on the risks associated with sea-level rise and the solutions to address them. The report will be presented during a dedicated side event at COP29 on November 14th. Nature-based solutions, such as ecosystem restoration, are prominently featured among the proposed solutions, with the role of insurance exemplified as a key tool in addressing and mitigating these risks.
