The last stage of the Naturethon initiative

The call for proposals of this citizen engagement initiative, designed to tap into the collective understanding of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) deployment, will close on September 30.

As the curtain falls on the final event, now it’s time for Naturethon‘s participants to share their nature-inspired ideas by filling the exit survey. The survey aims to collect the ideas discussed within citizen groups in various formats, including drawings, text, videos, and any means to convey the imagined solution.

The final webinar, held on September 17, focused on financial frameworks that significantly impact urban areas, with particular emphasis on the social value of NbS for adaptation in urban contexts. Silvia Ainio, a climate policy expert specializing in international climate negotiations and sustainable finance, provided a global overview of the main challenges in financing nature-based solutions, particularly related to scaling up the role of the private sector and illustrated a few innovative examples on how these could be overcome.

Following, Marianne Zandersen, professor in environmental economics at Aarhu University, Denmark, talked about social and economic benefits and values from NbS at the urban scale, focusing on well-being and health values. She showed an example of a mixed method approach that considers the multiple values we might assign to NbS on the benefits, importance and usefulness of NbS.

The discussions in the previous two webinars – the recordings are available on the Digital Library – centered on Nbs and their applications in climate mitigation, as well as their successful integration with insurance models to enhance resilience against extreme natural hazards. The economic implications of these solutions were also explored.

Back to the survey, all contributions will be compiled into a comprehensive proceeding of the Naturethon, which will be reviewed by experts. Each group will also receive a certificate of completion. Exceptional innovative solutions will be recognized with:

  • NATURANCE acknowledgment and enrollment in our research and evidence-seeking program.
  • Invitations for team representatives to attend high-level project gatherings.

We eagerly look forward to your creative ideas!
