At the Disaster Research Days 2024 Jaroslav Mysiak participated in the panel “Revealing synergies: CERIS and E-STAG joint Roadmap of Actions for a stronger implementation of the Sendai Framework” on Thursday, October 10th. The event, jointly organized by the European Commission’s Community of European Research and Innovation for Security (CERIS) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s European Science and Technology Advisory Group (E-STAG) was held at the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
As the coordinator of the Naturance project and an active member of both the E-STAG and CERIS networks, Mysiak shared his views on linking research and policy agendas and roadmaps to address today’s most pressing challenges. In his contribution, Mysiak outlined how CERIS and E-STAG can align their initiatives to integrate the latest scientific findings into policies and practices for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation.
He stressed the importance of coordinating the definition of key risks and propagation pathways affecting societal resilience, as well as addressing implementation challenges at national and regional levels, which require cross-border partnerships. He emphasized the importance of integrating science, policy, and practice, stressing the joint roadmap’s role in promoting evidence-based actions and tracking progress toward the Sendai Framework’s global targets, as well as the Global Goal on Adaptation under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Against this background, Mysiak explained the evolving role of insurance in managing disaster and climate risks, noting a silent transformation where insurance is gradually being redefined, not just as a financial service but as a fundamental right and public good. He stated that this shift is reflected in policy goals, embraced by international and European research and policy agendas, aimed at closing the financial protection gap and ensuring that communities and individuals have access to adequate risk protection and support in the face of disasters.
He referred to the work undertaken by Naturance, which seeks to link nature restoration with innovative financial, insurance, and investment instruments, addressing both the climate and biodiversity crises simultaneously.
